Improving Chart Documentation (3 hours)
The Office of Inspector General's audits of the Medicare program reveal continued problems with chart documentation resulting in significant overpayments. Attendees will learn practical ways to improve documentation to prevent an overpayment determination.
Gray Areas of Coding and Documentation (2 hours)
Many of the rules and regulations associated with coding and documentation are not black and white. They are gray and subject to interpretation. This course explores many of the gray areas and considers various interpretations of published definitions, rules, and regulations.
Practice Patterns (1 hour)
Statistical information that describes the expected utilization pattern for services provided is presented. The information provides a basis to perform a utilization analysis of your individual practice. Additional statistics are provided relating to Medicare audits and indicators that may "red flag" a practice for an audit.
Charting and Reimbursement Issues in ASCs (1 hour)
The ASC environment is very different than the clinic. The issues and problems with coding and reimbursement are unique. We examine charting and reimbursement regulations for the ASC.
Developing a Quality Assurance Program (1 hour)
Ophthalmic practices should regularly monitor their billing procedures. Some implement formal compliance programs, others adopt a less formal quality assurance program. The development of a quality assurance program and how it differs from a formal compliance program is discussed. Remedies for problems are addressed.
Technician's Role in Practice Compliance (1 hour)
Ophthalmic Medical Technicians play a vital role in providing ophthalmic care in most practices and are ideal candidates for taking on responsibility for compliance within the practice. Strategies for creating a compliance team will be discussed.
Improving Reimbursement (1 hour)
Improved reimbursement is achieved by recognizing areas with the practice that need to be analyzed. This course provides a list of suggested subjects to examine and adjust with an end result of improved reimbursement.
How to Attract (Unwanted) Attention from Medicare (1 hour)
Medicare audits a variety of physician practices annually. There are "red flags" that attract Medicare's attention to a particular practice. This course identifies some potential red flags and suggests policies and procedures that guard against or prepare you for the unwanted attention.
Reviewing Your Medical Records: How to Get Started (1 hour)
Practices are encouraged to review their own medical records, yet many do not know where to start. This course assists in how to select charts to review and identify areas of improvement. We also provide suggestions on how to organize findings, communicate results to physicians and staff, monitor progress, and how to implement strategies for improvements.
Reimbursement for New Technology (1 hour)
The opportunities to improve patient care with new diagnostic equipment and procedures continue to grow. The reimbursement for the new technology frequently presents a challenge. This course presents considerations and how to deal with them.
Managing the Business Office (1 hour)
The task of managing the business office is challenging. This course discusses the issues of financial management including accounts receivable, claim denials and the role of all staff in the efficiency of the business office.
Common Billing and Documentation Errors (1 hour)
This course provides a list of common billing and documentation errors to examine and adjust. Awareness and appreciation of these issues improves compliance with third party payer regulations and may improve reimbursement for the practice.

Group practices with ophthalmic subspecialists are challenged with their own unique documentation and coding issues. This course examines the distinct issues associated with coding and documenting for the various subspecialties and group practice concerns.
