Monograph - Corneal Topography - M08

This discussion focuses on the reimbursement of corneal topography with an emphasis on corneal topography prior to cataract surgery.

Corneal topography is most frequently used for the diagnosis and management of corneal disease, disorders, abnormalities, or injury. Corneal topography is an important test that helps the surgeon plan a refractive surgery procedure. This test is also valuable prior to cataract surgery when a combined procedure, including a refractive component such as keratotomy or keratoplasty, is planned. In the case where the surgeon plans to insert a toric intraocular lens (IOL), corneal topography helps determine the proper position for the lens so astigmatism is reduced.

This monograph is meant to assist the reader to better understand the rules and regulations regarding reimbursement for corneal topography, however, the responsibility for documentation and coding rests with the physician.
