Course Description
Introduction to ICD-10 Structure (2.5 hour)
This section describes the theory and principles of ICD-10, how it differs from ICD-9, layout of the codes, special terminology, and General Equivalency Mapping (GEM) files.
Implementation Strategy (0.5 hour)
This section provides a step-by-step process to implement ICD-10 in your practice prior to October 1, 2015.
Hands-On Workshop with Practical Cases (5.0 hour)
This section provides coding practice using the 2015 ICD-10-CM handbook, GEM files, free ICD-10 applications for smart phones and tablets. A range of cases are used to develop skill, speed, and proficiency.

Instructional Objectives
This course provides knowledge and tools to improve documentation in the medical record, and code accurately on claims for reimbursement using Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), International Classification of Disease (ICD), and Health Care Procedure Coding System (HCPCS). Attendees gain advanced understanding and appreciation of coding concepts that will serve them well for quality assurance and compliance purposes. Attendees learn ICD-10 principles and gain practical experience with this new code set during a hands-on workshop using practical examples from ophthalmology and optometry.

This section describes new codes, new Medicare policies and regulations, new payment rates, evolution of utilization patterns for ophthalmic services in the Medicare population and other noteworthy changes.
New Coding Emphasis within EMR (1.0 hour)
This section describes how electronic medical records (EMR) is affecting coding, particularly for evaluation and management (E/M) codes. The role of scribes within EMR is discussed. Unintentional charting problems are identified and corrective measures recommended.
Review of Crucial Coding Concepts (1.0 hours)
This section rapidly reviews essential coding concepts that are often misunderstood. Attendees are challenged to answer questions and demonstrate a good grasp of key points.
How To Use Corcoran’s Office Visit Matrix (1.0 hour)
This section provides attendees with a practical technique for selecting an appropriate E/M code or general ophthalmology code to report an office visit. Case studies are used to illustrate the technique and to develop proficiency.
