ABN Update

CMS published a new Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage (ABN) effective June 21, 2017. The basic components of the form and the way it is completed have not changed. The only change to the form is the addition of language informing patients that CMS does not discriminate and patients may request the ABN in an alternate format (e.g., large print). The new language below the signature box reads:

CMS does not discriminate in its programs and activities. To request this publication in an alternative format, please call: 1-800-MEDICARE or email: AltFormatRequest@cms.hhs.gov.

As of June 21, all ABNs provided to patients should list the form expiration date as 03/2020. The footer should read:

Form CMS-R-131 (Exp. 03/2020)                     Form Approved OMB No. 0938-0566
