AETNA No Longer Requiring Prior Authorization for Cataract Surgery
The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) and American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) have spearheaded a year-long effort to remove the policy that the insurance company had in place requiring preauthorization for cataract surgery, beginning July 1, 2021.
Due to the efforts of ASCRS and AAO, AETNA has announced that it will no longer require preauthorization for cataract surgery, except for Medicare Advantage beneficiaries in Georgia and Florida.
AETNA notes that prior authorization for cataract surgery for Florida and Georgia Medicare Advantage members will continue through iCare. Use the telephone numbers listed below for Medicare members in those states:
- Georgia Medicare only (MEHMO and MEPPO): Contact iCare at 1-844-210-7444.
- Florida Medicare only (MEHMO and MEPOS): Contact iCare at 1-855-373-7627.
