CMS Makes New Version of ABN Available
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) has finally had the updated Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage (ABN) form approved. It is available for use by providers and ASCs alike for Part B Medicare use. CMS notes the following at their “Fee for Service” (FFS) ABN website link:
The ABN, Form CMS-R-131, and form instructions have been approved by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for renewal. The use of the renewed form with the expiration date of 06/30/2023 will be mandatory on 8/31/2020. The ABN form and instructions may be found in the download section.
Note that you can use the new ABN form version immediately if desired, but you also have the option of using the older version form until August 31, 2020. All uses of the older version must cease as of that date as it could be considered an invalid notice. The download they refer to above for the ABN instructions is at this link.
ABNs may be used for a wide variety of reasons. We have customized versions in both MS Word and Adobe PDF formats of this new ABN form version for the most common uses available for free download on the Corcoran website in the “Forms” tab at the top. You can link to those new forms here; scroll down to see them.
We also have an FAQ on the proper use of the ABN forms. You can link to purchase it at nominal cost here. Importantly, the official ABN is not for use for Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) or for private payers; check with them for how they want financial waivers to be accomplished.
We are available and happy to assist you with issues such as this and other topics related to eye care. Stay safe.
