Delay to Enrollment Requirement Announced

CMS announced today a delay in implementing phase 2 of the enrollment requirements that may have resulted in claim denials beginning April 5, 2010. The new effective date is January 3, 2011.

Claims with an ordering/referring physician name and NPI number require that the ordering/referring physician be enrolled in the Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS).

The delay provides additional time for physicians and suppliers to enroll or bring enrollment information current within the PECOs system.

To determine if you are already in the system, review the pdf file found at: http://www.cms.hhs.gov/MedicareProviderSupEnroll/06_MedicareOrderingandReferring.asp. If you are included on this list, no action is necessary. If you are not currently on the list, you need to take action to update your information.
