ICD-10 Implementation Delay Finalized
On Friday, August 24, 2012, the department of Health and Human Services announced that the deadline for ICD-10 implementation will be October 1, 2014. This is a one year delay from the October 1, 2013 deadline established in 2009. The new ruling will appear in the Federal Register on September 5, 2012. The medical community has been deeply concerned about the implementation of ICD-10 occurring while they are also trying to comply with other required programs (PQRS, ERX, and electronic health records). The additional year provides an opportunity to better prepare for the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10.
