ABN forms for Advantage Plans

As we reported in a news item in June, CMS’ letter dated May 5, 2014, to the Medicare Advantage Plans (MA) indicated that the CMS Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) should NOT be used by MA plans. The letter indicates that providers notify MA plan beneficiaries that they have a “pre-authorization” from the plan indicating noncovered status before providing noncovered services to beneficiaries. The beneficiaries should also sign a form acknowledging their agreement to accept financial responsibility for these noncovered services.

Recently, some MA plans have published specific forms for this purpose. The following link connects to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s form.

We recommend you check your Advantage Plan websites for further instructions and specific forms for use.
