Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Update

CMS transmittal R2708CP released May 17, 2013, provides notification of the July update to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS). Of note for ophthalmologists and optometrists is a change to the bilateral indicator for CPT code 92071, Fitting of contact lens for ocular surface disease.

The indicator will change to “1” meaning that if billed with modifier 50, the payment will be 150% of the allowed amount. This change is retroactive to January 1, 2013.
