Medicare Releases Physician Payments
In an unprecedented move, as of April 9, 2014, CMS has publicly released the records of payments by Medicare to individual physicians, identifying them by name as well as showing the procedures they billed. According to an article published in the Wall Street Journal, “The top 1% of 825,000 individual medical providers accounted for 14% of the $77 billion in billing”. Of the 1,000 physicians paid the most by Medicare, ophthalmologists accounted for 1 out of 3.
