New HCPCS Code for Bevacizumab (Avastin)
CMS announced the addition of a new HCPCS code for bevacizumab as of October 1, 2009. The new code reads:
- Q2024 Injection, bevacizumab, 0.25 mg
Separate reimbursement for the drug will be made to physicians, ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), and hospital outpatient departments (HOPDs). The reimbursement rate will be published at the end of September.
Of particular note for practices injecting this drug is the dosage associated with the new code. For example, if the physician injects 1.25 mg, report 5 units (i.e., 5 x 0.25).
This drug is off-label when used to treat eye disease. Many payers struggle with the appropriate HCPCS code because of the small dose delivered into the eye and method of administration. This new code should eliminate the confusion.
