NPI / PIN Compatibility

By October 31, 2007, your Medicare claims will be rejected if your Medicare carrier cannot match your NPI and PIN combination to the Medicare NPI crosswalk files. Several scenarios may cause rejects. For example, if the claim NPI number is the corporate NPI number, but the PIN belongs to the physician, the combination may be incompatible resulting in a denial.

Practices should watch for denials and immediately address the issue by examining the enrollment information on file at the carriers office. New enrollment forms may be required to correct inaccuracies.
