Optical Dispensaries Requires Accreditation

Postcataract eyeglasses are covered by Medicare as prosthetic devices. As such, they are subject to rules governing Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies (DMEPOS). The Medicare Modernization Act requires that all DMEPOS providers, including optical dispensaries, become accredited by a CMS-approved accreditation organization.

The deadline for becoming accredited is September 30, 2009. We urge our affected clients to move forward sooner rather than later, since these organizations will undoubtedly become busier as the deadline nears. Providers who are not accredited before the deadline will lose their ability to supply Medicare-covered eyeglasses.

More information, including the accreditation standards and a listing of approved accreditation organizations, can be found at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/MedicareProviderSupEnroll/03_DeemedAccreditationOrganizations.asp

Corcoran will publish additional information in future newsletters.
