Reimbursement Considerations of the Implantable Miniature Telescope (VisionCare Ophthalmic Technologies)
The Implantable Miniature Telescope™ (by Dr. Isaac Lipshitz) offers a significant visual rehabilitative treatment option to patients living with central blindness due to untreatable end-stage, non-exudative, age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
This monograph describes Medicare reimbursement for the examinations and tests before and after implantation, the surgery and the prosthetic device. The CentraSight™ treatment program uses a multidisciplinary team approach including a retinologist, cornea specialist and low vision specialists so we discuss their roles (see Figure 1). The most time consuming aspect of care is low vision rehabilitation, and we devote a part of this monograph to that topic.
Much of the information is taken from official publications of the Medicare program, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Medicare Administrative Contractors (MAC). However, the reader is encouraged to check with the local MAC for additional information and instructions. In the case of other third party payers, we have used the coding concepts contained in Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and published by the American Medical Association; diagnosis codes are from International Classification of Diseases (ICD), 9th edition (ICD-9), and ICD-10-CM.
