Reimbursement Guidelines for Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (Quantel Medical)

This monograph addresses the reimbursement issues associated with the treatment of open angle glaucoma using laser trabeculoplasty, and particularly selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT).

Much of the information in this document is taken from official publications of the Medicare program.  The reader is encouraged to check with the local Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) for additional information and instructions.  For other third party payers, we have used the coding concepts contained in CPT and published by the American Medical Association; diagnosis codes are from ICD-10-CM and ICD-9-CM.  Documentation of the laser procedure, as well as the medical necessity for it, is the key factor to supporting reimbursement, so we cover it in detail.

Since economic analyses are a necessary part of any capital budgeting decision, we incorporate Medicare’s payment rates for the procedure, as well as a discussion of utilization rates.
